Privacy Policy

In short: qcalculate doesn't ask for your name or email, and calculates in your own browser. We use Google Analytics to see which pages are used, and it isn't given the numbers you type.

The numbers you type

Calculations run in your web browser. As you type, your numbers are also added to the page address (for example ?p=15&w=200) so you can bookmark or share the calculation. If you reload the page or open such a link, that address, including the numbers in it, is sent to our hosting provider like any other web address. Anyone you share a link with can see the numbers in it. Google Analytics is given the page address with the numbers taken out.

Cookies and local storage

Google Analytics sets two cookies whose names start with _ga. They hold a random ID so it can tell a new visit from a returning one, and they last up to two years. In the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland they are only set if you agree; until then, Google Analytics stores nothing on your device.

The step player remembers the animation speed you choose in your browser's local storage. It stays on your device. You can clear cookies and local storage in your browser settings at any time.

Visitor statistics

We use Google Analytics to see which calculators are used, how people find them and how long they stay. It records the pages you open, the site or search that sent you, your browser, device and screen size, your language, and roughly where you are (country and city, worked out from your IP address, which Google Analytics doesn't store). In the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland, until you agree to cookies, it only receives basic cookie-free signals, such as that a page was opened.

Google Analytics is run by Google: see how Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can turn it off on every website with Google's opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking cookies.

We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It does not use cookies, does not collect personal data and does not track you across websites.

When you answer “Was this calculator helpful?”, Google Analytics counts the answer (yes or no) and the page. If you choose “No”, you can email us if you want to.

When you search for a calculator on the home page, Google Analytics counts what you searched for, with any numbers replaced by #, and how many calculators matched.

Calculators on other websites

Other websites can show some of our calculators in a frame (our free widgets). The widgets set no cookies and collect no personal data. The website showing the widget has its own privacy policy for everything else on its page.

Hosting and security

The site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, to deliver the site and protect it from attacks. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Email

If you email us, we use your email address and message only to reply and to fix any problem you report. We don't share them or add you to a mailing list.

Advertising

qcalculate does not show ads at the moment. If we add advertising in the future, we will update this policy before ads appear and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Children

qcalculate is a general-audience website and can be used by students. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. On pages for younger students, such as long division and fractions, Google Analytics' advertising features are switched off.

Your rights

Google Analytics links what it records only to the random ID in its cookie, not to your name or email, so we usually can't tell which data is yours. Clearing the cookies starts a new ID. If you have emailed us and want your messages deleted, ask us and we will delete them.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when the way we handle data changes, and change the date at the top.
