    How GPA is calculated

    1. Turn each grade into grade points using the 4.0 scale below.
    2. Multiply by the course’s credits to get its quality points. A 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit one.
    3. Add up all the quality points and all the credits.
    4. Divide the quality points by the credits.

    For the courses above: (4.0 × 4 + 3.3 × 3 + 3.7 × 4 + 3.0 × 3) ÷ 14 = 49.7 ÷ 14 = 3.55.

    The 4.0 grade scale

    GradePointsGradePoints
    A+ / A4.0C+2.3
    A−3.7C2.0
    B+3.3C−1.7
    B3.0D+ / D / D−1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7
    B−2.7F0.0

Some schools give 4.3 for an A+, or use a different scale. Check your school’s handbook if your GPA must match an official transcript.

    Weighted and unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every course. A weighted GPA rewards harder courses: many US high schools add 0.5 points for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB courses, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. That is why weighted GPAs can be above 4.0. Colleges often look at both.

    Cumulative GPA

To combine semesters, add up quality points and credits across all of them; don’t average the GPAs. With a 3.2 GPA from 30 earlier credits (96 quality points) and 49.7 quality points from 14 new credits, the cumulative GPA is (96 + 49.7) ÷ 44 ≈ 3.31. Open Include earlier semesters to do this.

    Questions

    Is a 3.5 GPA good?

On the 4.0 scale, 3.5 is between a B+ and an A− average, which is above average at most schools. What counts as good depends on your school and your goals.

How can I raise my GPA?

Courses with more credits move your GPA the most, so focus there. Each new semester also counts for less as your total credits grow, which is why early grades matter.

    Do pass/fail courses count?

Usually not: most schools leave pass/fail courses out of the GPA. Don’t add them here.

Does an F get the AP bonus?

No. In this calculator an F stays at 0 points in every course, as at most schools.
