How to count the days between two dates

Count whole years, then whole months, then the days left, and add up the days in each. From 1 November to 25 December 2026: November has 30 days, so 1 November to 1 December is 30 days, and 1 December to 25 December is 24 more, 54 days in all.

The months have different lengths. The old rhyme helps: “Thirty days has September, April, June and November; all the rest have thirty-one, except February, which has 28, or 29 in a leap year.”

Should I count the end date?

By default this counts the days from the first date to the second, like nights in a hotel: Monday to Friday is 4 days. If both days count, like days of a festival or of leave from Monday to Friday, tick “Count the end date too” to add 1: 5 days.

    Weekdays and business days

The weekday count leaves out Saturdays and Sundays. Public holidays are different in every country, so they aren’t taken off: subtract the ones that fall on weekdays in the period. From Monday 5 January to Friday 16 January 2026 there are 9 weekdays, or 10 counting the Friday.

    Questions

How do I count days between dates in Excel?

Subtract the dates: with them in A2 and B2, =B2-A2 gives the days between. =NETWORKDAYS(A2, B2) counts weekdays, including both the first and the last day.

How many days are there in a year?

365, or 366 in a leap year. Leap years are divisible by 4, except century years that aren’t divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, and 2100 won’t be.

Does it work for dates far in the past?

Yes, for any year from 1 to 9999 on the Gregorian calendar we use today. Countries switched to it at different times from 1582 onwards, so for older dates the calendar people actually used may differ.
